The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) has warned potential home owners to be wary of developers who make promises that sound too good to be true.

The NHBRC says first time buyers, in particular, are vulnerable.

The warning comes after a number of disgruntled home owners complained that they had been duped by unscrupulous property developers in Cape Town.

In the most recent incident, a number of prospective home owners in Eerste River were left high and dry after signing up for a 'buy off-plan' development called Sillwood Estate in Eerste River in 2007.

However, many still don’t have their homes and are already servicing bonds.

One of those affected, known only as Fatima, told Eyewitness News her dreams of moving into her home before Christmas have been dashed.

"I also bought a property in Sillwood Estate two years ago. I’m now servicing a bond for three months for a house that I don’t have. We’ve been pulled on a threat from developer to developer for two years and to date nobody can give us an estimated completion date for our property."
