My question is what happens in the case of you making the payment but the owner of the debt not marking it as paid. I paid off and closed my Edgars account years ago when I was a student. Edgars erroneously added a bad credit rating against my name although I did not owe them any more money. 5 years later when I applied for a bond the black mark against my name appeared to make things difficult for me. How long do these black marks stay against your name? In this case it truly was not my fault. I haven't bothered to fight it because thats more hassle than its worth to be honest. Since then I have been extremely careful with payments and keeping records of payments made.. K");

document.write("I have just read the article which provides advice on how to maintain a good credit rating.
The advice is reasonable & mostly obvious.
My finances at present are sound. I have no loans & do not run any accounts.
I also do not have any court judgements against me.
I have a credit card which I keep with a positive balance because the interest rate is
better than Savings rates.
Regular monthly payments (Telkom, MTN, Matrix, etc.) are paid automatically by debit order.
My question is about how to get an idea what my credit rating is.
A few months ago I went to the Experian website & requested their free service.
I completed a very long online questionnaire with all my personal details, ID, Bank account,
addresses, phone numbers et al.
At the end when the info was submitted I got a response that basically implied that they had no idea who I was.
I was rather annoyed that I had divulged so much personal info which now presumably resides on
one or more databases. I do not think that this is ethical.
Surely there is a safer or more personal way of obtaining a rating?
I have asked my bank & all that they can tell me is my score out of 10.
It is not important to know my rating now but I may perhaps have a requirement in the future.
