Rent out your home
Renting out your home is the easiest and most popular way to cash in on the very real fear that there'll be a shortage of accommodation for the half a million visitors that will descend on South Africa later this year.
Even Sepp Blatter, usually an eternal optimist, has warned that there will be shortages, especially in smaller host cities such as Bloemfontein.
So, how can you help ease the accommodation situation and make a buck while you're at it?
Most South African property sites have listings of short-term rentals that are available all over the country. By listing your home on one of these you're almost certain to generate interest very quickly.
Although there are many property matchmaking sites, there are two that earn particular mention: www.istopover.co.za and www.2010propertyrentals.co.za. Both these sites are up and running and already very busy registering homes.
If your home is clean, cosy and relatively near one of the stadiums, then you can coin it. You don't need a mansion in Clifton to make money by renting out your home. In fact, the market for smaller (read cheaper) rentals is much, much bigger especially in cities that aren't known for hosting many tourists.
If you're turning your home into a temporary B&B, I suggest you add value to your guests' experience, not to mention your pocketbook, by offering extras like taxi and laundry services.
If you go the home renting route, make sure you're properly insured and only deal with a reputable rental company.
Charge your guests a fair price; don't be a rip-off! Treat your guests like kings and queens and do your utmost to make their trip an experience they'll cherish forever. Remember, you're an ambassador for South Africa and a representative of us all.
